Samhaa R. El-Beltagy

Biography: Samhaa R. El-Beltagy is a computer science professor and the Dean of the School of Information Technology at Newgiza University. She is also a member of the technical committee of Egypt's National Council for AI and a jury member for L'Oréal's For Women in Science program. Prior to joining NGU, El-Beltagy was the Head of Research and Development at Optomatica, a company dedicated to developing AI solutions for real-life problems, and she continues to support the company. She is also a co-founder of AIM Technologies, a start-up operating in the Middle East that utilizes NLP technologies and advanced analytics. In 2022, she was listed as one of the top 30 leaders in AI in the Arab World by MIT Technology Review. She holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Southampton, as well as a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the American University in Cairo. El-Beltagy has over 80 international publications and has served on multiple international committees and program committees, including ACL and EMNLP. She is also a co-founder and organizer of the International ACLing conference series and was the 2022 EMNLP tutorial co-chair. Her research interests include Arabic NLP, artificial intelligence, text mining, data mining, and intelligent search.

Abstract: Language is an incredibly complex and versatile means of communication. Without language, civilizations would not have risen and human communication would have been very limited. Now, more than ever we have access to immense amounts of language data. This talk will investigate the recent advances in NLP and how they can be used to help us make sense of this data. The talk will also highlight the challenges posed by the rapid advances in this highly dynamic field and how to navigate them.
